The IASS Consortium is pleased to announce its participation in Aerodays, the 7th European Aeronautics Days, which is the European flagship event in aviation research and innovation and takes place once, during each EU Research Framework Programme. The event will take place on October 20th – 23rd, 2015 and its goal is to share achievements of collaborative research and innovation in Aeronautics and Air Transport within Europe and in world-wide international co-operation. Throughout the event, there will be five key themes based on Europe’s Vision for Aviation ‘Flightpath 2050‘and subsequent work of ACARE.
- Efficient and seamless mobility
Connectivity through transport directly supports wealth and prosperity, cohesion, international relations and stability. Aviation is a key component of that transport system, adding global to local value through both businesses (by supporting exports, inward investment, local employment) and the general public (e.g. to enable visits to friends and relatives and for leisure purposes). Aviation technologies will ensure that the sector is an integral and seamless node of the future transport system.
- Competitiveness of Industry
Innovation and technological leadership is the major competitive differentiator for European industry for the foreseeable future. With emerging players vying for market share in this high value sector, technologies that optimise energy use and environmental performance, and maximise efficiency, quality and reliability will be the keys to success.
- Greening of Aviation
The 1999 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) study found that if aircraft carbon emissions continue to rise they could contribute up to 15 per cent of global warming from all human activities within 50 years. Towards 2050, the forecast growth in the aviation industry will drive the need to deliver revolutionary technology solutions at an increasing rate to fully mitigate this impact.
- Safety & Security
Air capacity is set to grow both in number, as well as types of users (e.g. unmanned systems). For aviation to maintain and improve on an already remarkable safety record, a total system approach to aviation safety will be needed . Security poses increasingly complex challenges for aviation in both the physical and cyber worlds. Future security systems will need to mitigate these challenges, while preserving passenger privacy and personal dignity, ensuring they do not cause interruption, disruption or delay. Furthermore, aviation security will need to be an integral part of wider transport security that balances effectiveness, passenger experience and seamlessness.
- Skills for Breakthroughs
Zero-carbon flight, autonomous air vehicles and smart materials that can adapt to flight conditions and even repair themselves have all been demonstrated. For these and future exciting breakthroughs to have an impact on the environmental performance, safety, efficiency, passenger experience and industrial competiveness of European Aviation; a highly skilled workforce with access to state-of-the-art facilities will be needed.
