The University of Salerno has very ancient origins as it is one of the oldest Universities in Europe together with Paris and Bologna. The University of Salerno will contribute to the IASS project with the staff and the facilities of three departments: Department of Industrial Engineering (DIIn), Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (DIIE) and department of Chemistry and Biology (DCB).
DIIN applied research is focused on the following sectors: Health, Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology, Information and Communication Technologies (Icts), Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies, Energy, Environment (including Climate Change), Transport, Socio-Economic Sciences and the Humanities, Security, Space.
DIIE research activity regards analysis, modeling, design, simulation, manufacturing and optimization of components and complex systems for high technological fields; DCB in focused on fundamental chemistry and applied chemistry. The use of heterogeneous and homogeneus catalysts for the synthesis of macromolecules is one of major research aspect treated by DCB.
The three departments, DIIn, DIIIE, and DCB are equipped with advanced tools aimed to study the correlations between structure and physical properties of polymeric materials for multifunctional properties : wide and small angle X-ray diffractograms (WAXD and SAXD), NMR, and the morphology as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force Microscopy (AFM). Equipments for the study of mechanical properties (Tensile stress-strain instruments and Dynamic mechanical properties) and Transport Properties (Sorption and Diffusion of gases and vapors) are also available.
Role in the project
UNISA will provide competences in the field of Chemical basis of technologies, polymer synthesis and electromagnetic characterization of polymeric materials and on the development of self-healing and conductive composites. The interdisciplinary knowledge between the three departments is a fundamental aspect for the development of the main activities (UNISA) of the project, especialy for the activities of monitoring and diagnosis of the weak points to overcome in the field of thermosetting materials for aeronautical application.
